A self inflating mattress on a decent camp stretcher, will provide you with the best night's sleep ever. I will never own another air mattress,as long as I live. Sim's are also much warmer. The only downside is the pack up size of the 10cm models that we use. Around the size of 3 rolled up sleeping bags. A small price to pay for a decent nights sleep.

Can you use SIM's as mattress toppers in caravans?
Just got me thinking, to give her more support in bed on top of the mattress bed*.
*Our bed is the remove and rearrange front seating, not a fixed bed.
So long as you don't mind being different heights in bed I can't see it being a problem (or just buy two to level up).
My advice would be that as you are using it as a topper a 5cm Aldi/lidl SIM should be adequate. We have the Aldi ones which are around 70cm wide and it's comfy on a camp bed but a bit hard on the ground so should be ok on a foam bed too.
I'm guessing it's the joins and dimples in the cushions that cause discomfort? It will be a personal thing how much air you need to let out once inflated, I find just doing the valve up makes it too hard for me to sleep on so have to lay on the mat whilst doing it up works best for me (some just sit or kneel on it).
Make sure it is left to fully inflate 24 hours before first using it and best stored flat.
