I have a Coleman stove at the Moment which hasn't been used since we stopped camping a few years back. It's runs off little disposable propane gas cylinders which are horrendously expensive for how long they last.
We have just about made our mind up on a new tent and now in the market for a new gas stove/cooker. We ideally would need 1 hob and 1 griddle. We have been looking at the campingaz 400 sg but can't find any reviews on it and I don't quite know easy it will be to clean etc.
Our budget it upto £90 and as compact as possibly really.
Any suggestions on any other feasible cookers?
Also, as I have no experience with calor gas bottles etc, do you just hire them at the camp site or do you need to get one before hand? Not all that keen on travelling around the country with one is all.
As we are normally EHU we have electric hob & halogen oven however I have bought gas appliances for when we venture away for a few nights non EHU. I won a campingaz chef plus at the big camp last year but like you was unsure of whether I want to take along a biggish gas bottle. It's cheaper to 'acquire' an empty bottle and pay for a 'refill' than pay the 'deposit' to a supplier.
I also bought a Sunngas Platinum baby uno stove, it uses the cheapest small canisters. I then bought a Cadac mini chef which runs on the larger but more expensive screw in cartridges (twice the size but four times the price), I have bought an adapter to run the cheap suitcase cartridges but yet to try it.
this will enable you to run your current Coleman stove off a bulk Propane bottle. Theres an example of that in my gallery.
We have found the Coleman's to be more powerful than most camping stoves, a bit like cooking at home tbh. Just a suggestion.
Re Calor. Yes you need one. They can often be picked up on freecycle or gumtree for next to nothing. Just take that and swap it at a Calor dealer for a full one.
Edited to add.. We also refill those one pound Coleman bottles, there are threads on here that cover how thats done.

Smallest Calor cylinder holds 4.5g of butane (or 3.9kg of propane), largest Campingaz (R907) holds 2.72 butane and although it usually costs more for a refill (so works out much more expensive kg for kg) is often more convenient where space and payload are considerations. (Another advantage of Campingaz over Calor is its availability on the Continent).
In either case you will need a regulator specific to the cylinder, and as mentioned by Tynxuk, will probably be charged a hefty "deposit" on your first cylinder from a "regular" outlet.
Never heard of a campsite hiring cylinders, though some (by no means all) will stock them and exchange your empty one for a pre-filled one for the price of the gas.
Thanks for the info. I have just purchased that propane extension hose hlk01. Did you have to put a separate regulator on or does the regulator on metal elbow suffice?
Thanks for the info hacksaw bob. I don't think we will be going out of the uk anytime soon tbh.

That Coleman hose is good to go. One end attaches to the gas bottle, tuther end where you would normally screw on the bottle. :) we bought ours few years ago in the states and its been great. Not sure why Coleman never sold them here, as i can see they are available from Germany for £60 gulp.
Its a shame as Imo its the expensive wee bottles that has put folk off these fantastic stoves. GoOutdoors have the stoves in clearance section if you can find one. The large single burners were less than 8 pounds. Most of the time I can manage on that, only pull out the double burner when hubby is about.
Ps griddle .. Cast iron griidle pan or plate ;)
