Don't matter what condition it in as when u go and get a refill they swop it over so you get the fully tested one and then give them your one so it can be checked and then reused
Not all council tips will give away bottles now. If yours dosen't try local car boot sales. Most Calor suppliers will allow you to swap between most bottles, so you don't necessarily need empty 4.5kg, any other size should be ok as long as it is a Calor bottle & you can swap it for full 4.5kg.
If you have a local Freecycle or Freegle group online in the area, it might be worth posting a 'wanted' request for a bottle.
I had a few surplus bottles and gave them away through this service last year, so you might be lucky enough to find one too.

Exactly what I did to get one of my bottles. Someone replied who had an unwanted 4.5kg butane which I then promptly swapped at my Calor centre for a Gas lite!

That's the bonus with Calor, you can change ANY Calor bottle for any other Calor bottle... i.e. size and type of gas
Not quite any cylinder, not if the dealer goes by the letter of the cylinder exchange policy.. You can only exchange cylinders within the same group. The Lites used to be in Group B but as someone pointed out in another thread Calor have now put the Lites in a new group of their own to help with the shortage of Lite cylinders due to loads of people swapping their normal cylinders for Lites.
However saying that, not all dealers go by the Calor exchange policy. I swapped a 4.5kg and 13kh cylinder to get my two Lites, whereas they should've, at the time, only taken a 6/7kg in exchange. Basically they weren't bothered what cylinder you had, as long as it was Calor. So depending on what cylinder the OP ends up finding free/cheap, hopefully they find a dealer that lets them swap it for whatever they want.
Well I had real problems swapping my patio gas 5kg bottle to a 3.9kg propane, the local agents wouldn't swap said only like for like so went to the calor centre they tried to fob me off saying only like for like but I had printed out the exchange policy from their website...they said they had no 3.9 so said ok give me next size up...wasn't prepared to be fobbed off...lo and behold they produced a 3.9kg as requested!
