We have the erde trailer 122 with hard top and roof trailer bars. And on top of that bike things/racks.

Have not used the trailer with the hard top yet but wanted the bars to use for bikes or roof box - better for us as children get bigger kit seems to get larger.

In theory we could have a roof box on top of trailer and another one on top of the car or bike rack on trailer and roof box on car or even just a trailer.

We have the 122 with ABS lid and bars ... we had three bike racks mounted on it (by Halfords) when we bought it, some years ago.
When towing in the Alps, the hinge link that locks the tipping body to the tow bar sheered ... luckily I was going uphill and fairly slowly as we were looking at some goats!
Completed the holiday using a heavy duty ratchet strap as nowhere could fix it.
When I returned to UK, took it in to Halfords, who said, my fault as I had three bikes on it and it was only rated to carry two! When I pointed out that they had fitted the three carriers they rapidly agreed to fix the trailer.
So ... two bikes max.
You could look at a MaxxRaxx carrier ... I now use the 122 with a roofbox on it ... makes for a very aerodybanic unit, which looks pretty cool, too.

Hmm, but bikes can be ~10-25 kg so they need to tell you the load rating rather than a number of bikes limit IMO.

Yes, that makes sense ... I dare say three small kiddies bikes would be fine.
I presume Halfords were just giving a rule of thumb.
Either way, looking at the pin-hinge lock on the Erde ... it doesn't seem terribly 'macho'.

Hi,

Ive a brenderup 1205S and think it's a great trailer.  They do load bars for these and they are very sturdy.  I have just brought the side extensions and will get the flat hard top in the next month or so.  I get four bikes on this no problem, though with the side extensions it is getting a bit tall (I estimate 2.5 - 2.7M with bikes not built it up yet!).

I understand you can use the load bars with the ABS top as mentioned earlier (ABS) is a bit cheaper so worth a look.  There are also some reasonable deals around.

Happy hunting

DanR

Kelper - are you saying not to open the hard top lid with the bikes on top? Would not think of doing this. Or have i missed the point and you are talking about another hinge?

No ... the pin hinge that locks the body of the trailer box to the tow bar .... which, if taken out allows you to use the trailer as a tipper.

This is interesting, cheaper and lighter than most van trailers. Bikes could go in the trailer.

Dunno why it needs 4 wheels with it's low weight.

Hi,

I am new to this, I know this is an old thread, but it seemed the most relevant when I was doing some searches.

I have just brought an older Brenderup trailer with hardtop and gallery- I was wondering if anyone knew of bike carriers that would fit straight onto the gallery or do I need to get roof bars the same as for a car roof- If so what sort fit onto the gallery the best?

Thanks

We have one of the Brenderup 1205's with the high sides and ABS lid. When we bought it the people we bought it from (Tanfield Towing - fantastic people to deal with, couldn't do enough for us and even delivered an extra to our home 60 miles away with their van) wouldn't put the load bars for bikes on the ABS lid - said they were designed to be used with the other lid (flat one).

I directed them to photos of the trailer online with the bars and they were really surprised that they were being advertised like that - worth checking. We respected their decision, esp as they were losing money out of it and went without.

We have a roof top bike carrier so just carried on using that.
