some of the older type auto's needed an oil cooler fitted or the torque converter overheated. I think most of the newer models have overcome this problem but if you see a car you like you should contact the main dealers for info on it before you buy it as oil coolers can expensive to fit.
you will find that you lose about 300cc of equivalent engine size, so a manual engine of 2 litre you will need a 2.4 auto box to make the power feel right, the gearchanges will get on your nerves as the slightest hill and it will change so becomes more expensive fuel wise.
if you can stick with a manual, autos drink fuel and are far less responsive to drive, as for towing check very carefully re oil cooler as when you have any weight on the back it puts a lot more stress on the transmission.
We tow with an Auto it makes towing a pleasure - The nasty uphill down shift gearchanges which used to be a difficult process without losing all your speed now happen without power loss - But as others have mentioned - They are more thirsty may need an oil cooler and are expensive when they go wrong. Check that your car is designed to tow loads on the auto.
We've towed a 14cwt caravan plus equipment with an elderly BM auto - no problems. Whether you use an auto or a manuel it will still use more fuel when you're towing a caravan or heavy trailer.
