Hi
We are fairly new to camping and we are wondering whats the best ice packs to use for our Igloo cool box it's meant to keep ice frozen for 5 days?

Hi Ted ... the discussion on the "Aussie Gel packs" thread I just replied to might be of help.

I have learned with my small 25l icey-tek coolbox that it's important to pre-chill the coolbox for a day or so before using - I guess it must be similar for yours.

Not tried the gel packs myself. So far I have only tried bags of ice cubes and these keep the box cool easily for a long weekend in really hot weather - but with a larger coolbox and more ice I expect it would last longer. About to experiment with some larger blocks of ice.

We use a Coleman Xtreme 36 quart box when we don't have mains power. we freeze 2 x 2-litre bottles of water. They still have some ice in after 5 days.

As mentioned above, you need to pre-chill the box for at least a day before use and make sure all the stuff you put in is either frozen or chilled. also, only open the box when absolutely necessary and try to keep the box in shade and out of the tent when it's hot.

As per Ian above but I tended to use 1 litres bottles of frozen water, no ice cubes, some lidl ice block in the bottom. This worked really well for both the Coleman Xtreme and The Igloo Maxcold. i also kept a sheet of that polystyrene packing stuff folded to fill the empty space as stuff was used up, If you keep to opening it to a minimum you'll still have a lot of ice in those bottles after 5 days.

We use a frozen bottle of water 2L to help it cool off before using. Then load up with cold and frozen stuff.

But you may have a problem with frozen stuff staying frozen such as dinner on the first and second nights. It is too good at it's job!

For travelling we use ice blocks from home - about 5. Then either use ice block freezing or buy ice from the supermarket.
