Not quite the same thing, but similar, I have a Thule 902 EuroClassic, which is a towball mounted bike carrier.
Back in 2008 I discovered that you could get a Thule 900 BackUp Box that would clip onto the bike carrier, as it provided a platform for the Box.
At around 400lt the BackUp Box was a good size, so in 2009 we loaded up and set of to France for 3 weeks, although I had done many test runs with the loaded box attached to the car, this was the first and last journey with the car fully loaded using the BackUp Box.
What happend was the car felt very odd to handle with the steering becoming light as a feather, even though I had checked that I was not over the 75kg max towball ( nose weight) for the VW Golf which I was using.
The BackUp Box is a great bit of kit, it was just not suited to my car so I sold the BackUp Box to someone on here who had a more suitable vehicle, in fact they even had a EasyBase towball mounted rack already fitted to there people carrier.
And as everyone one else has has commented, I also went out and bought a new Trailer after the experience.
I still have the Thule 902 EuroClassic Bike carrier which must be almost 10 years old now, and that still gets used on a regular basis.

I have the Easy base, with the waterproof easy bag (soft box) and the 2 bike carrier.
I'll be selling all any time soon! :-)
The base can carry 45kg.
The easy bag holds 315 litres.
The bag and bike holders cannot be used together... one or the other.
You can add a further single bike carrier to the base, to carry a total of three... total weight permitting, of course.
Yes, when loaded, either with bikes or the bag, you won't be able to get the dogs in and out, unless they are miniature poodles!
It's brilliant for it's purpose, but it has limits, and needs to be unloaded before you can get gear from the boot.

Reasons for selling (when I get around to it) are that I don't need the bag any more, since replacing the astravan with the mpv, and I now have a Thule bike carrier that tips whilst still loaded, to allow full access to the boot.
