Hi all,

My husband and I are completely new to camping but definitely looking forward to it!
I have been researching cooking devices today and am a little stuck.
I thought that the cadac safari chef looked great!
But then someone else has said to get a stove like the
Campingaz stove here

Just wondering which is best really????
Thank you in advance! :-)

Can't comment on the Safari Chef but have been quite happy with a very old (1970s ?) version of the stove in your link, though I rarely use it as I find "suitcase" stoves more convenient.

You might like to consider the latest "more wind resistant" version of the Campingaz one.

Oh yes that does look better easier to pack away thank you.

Anyone else got any experience of the cadac safari chef?

we've got the Cadac now but have a hob to cook on. It's a great bit of kit and folds down into a small bag. we've cooked meat on there for 4 but don't think you could cook a complete meal on it.

Personally if you're in a tent I would go for the campingaz one as you could put saucepans on that one, use the grill which we found to be very good. we used to have T piece so we could run a gas BBQ from same gas bottle. If you have electric hook up I would take an electric kettle though.
Hope this helps.

(Look in the free ads we only paid £15 for our cooker which had only been used once and it had a gas bottle too, sold it for more than we paid for it!)

I have the Safari Chef HP version, and found it did not function well as a BBQ, as I could not get it hot enough.

However, others reported the LP version that use a big gas bottle performed better as a BBQ.

I bought the HP version with the intention of going to France with it so that I can BBQ using gas canisters. Had I known it does not perform well as a BBQ beforehand, I would probably not have bought it.

Be warned about the Safari Chef - it was nightmare to clean the plate/deflector that had charred burnt on food.

Nowadays, if I want to have a BBQ, I use a proper charcoal Weber Go Anywhere BBQ.

We have the LP safari chef which is fine for 2 of us(plus guests). Temperature is fine for BBQ so it could be the different pressure, like dk168 says.

I think we must be lucky though as we don't find it too bad to clean either.

Love it-it is very versatile and easy to use. The lid is great as a wok. We don't cook loads though-spag bol, chilli, curry or fajitas is usually the extent of our cooking.

I would personally go with a £10 cheap charcoal bbq and a cheap 'suitcase' stove, these cadacs are great but cooked with gas, no different from cooking inside your tent.. cant beat that charcoal / twig taste !!

Even though I love the Cadac I agree nothing beats charcoal. Have and still use suitcase stoves and the cadac beats it for versatility and speed.

We don't ever cook in the tent with gas though

Thanks everyone!
I think we will go for a stove and get a little charcoal BBQ too. Now all that's left I suppose is to buy one and get cooking!

Thanks again for all your help :-)

Sorry just thought to add -I would also consider how you want to cook.

Will you cook in the same spot or prefer to move depending on weather (especially if the forecasts are to be believed for the weather this summer)? If you like to cook in the open I would recommend one of the smaller stoves, whether that is a safari chef, suitcase stoves or any of the countless others available.

Our friends have a similar stove to the one you mentioned earlier and are more than happy with it but are looking to swap for something else as they don't like having to stand in one spot cooking at their kitchen stand while we move to the best place for the elusive sun.

I've had 2 cadacs two camping gas stoves and a few different bbqs. The answer is probably that you'll get something different from each and it will be down to how much you want to spend and how much space you have.

The larger cadac is fantastic and really versatile. The smaller one is also great and much more compact but you can't cook meals for 4 so easily without doing shifts. Either one will act as a proper oven and I have variously cooked pizza's , baked potatoes, fish and chips, garlic breads as well on a cadac as at home in my kitchen. You can also do big stir fry and breakfasts on them. What they Are not good at is allowing you to just boil things up, which is where you probably need a stove. I really loved my big cadac and regret having downsized recently, however i probably wouldn't have got my wet tent back in the roof box this afternoon if I still had the larger one.

If you getting a stove get a two rung burner and don't bother with getting one with a grill as the grills are tiny, and don't work well, particularly if you are using two rings at the same time.

Finally a weber smokey joe or go anywhere bbq are he'd to beat but so they should be for around £50. That's a lot unless you are going to use it more than a couple of times a year. If space is an issue notebook bbq's are great, although not necessarily as sturdy as a weber but you can pick up an outwell one for about £25. They are only 3 cm thick when folded so it's very easy to pack them in the car.

I would recommend stove first, cadac second if you could use a small oven, and are ok with grilled not bbq's food. If not get a notepad bbq for your second item.Hope this helps a little.

I have a Camping Chef for sale if you are anywhere near Milton Keynes, not sure I have the grill pan though.

Hi, thank you everyone I have now ordered a stove. I have seen the smokey joe bbqs at our local garden centre and they r on offer at the moment so will probably be taking a trip to take a look at one of those too.

Thanks for the offer David, but unfortunately I'm in the Channel Islands.
