Our kit has been packed up for a week waiting for a dry enough day to clean it. The footprint is going over the washing line to be hosed down, that's easy enough. I was congratulating myself on how the carpet had stayed nice and clean until I was looking some pictures of our first camp and realised it's actually filthy. I'm planning to spread it out on the patio and scrub it with warm water and washing up liquid. This will work won't it? It's too big for the washing machine and I'm not sure that would do it any good anyway.

You could hire a Rug Doctor machine from Sainsburys - that will clean it and suck out the dirt and grit. Just scrubbing tends to mean it will get dirty quick again because it is still there to some extent. Unless of course you can hang it on a line and wash it out by hosing it through -it could shrink this way depending on the content. Wool or cotton would generally shrink but not man made fibres. Look for cleaning instructions.

If you know anyone with a steam cleaner they do a fabulous job. I have the H20 X5 one and it really does a great job with no chemicals. So quick and easy and carpet won't be soaking wet so no shrinkage worries.

What about using the launderette? They have commercial size drums.

I would not use a carpet cleaner on ours as it is really thin - just thin padding (sponge) then thin fleece on top and it is a vango one.

I second the rug doctor. I did all the carpets in my house and the 2 tent carpets at the same time. Little tip, we don't buy the solution, persil small and mighty works really well as an alternative.

I did mine with a bucket of warm water, carpet shampoo in the water and a rubber buddy broom from Lakeland. I spread the carpet on the lawn, wetted it with the hose, and poured little pools of the carpet shampoo water onto it. Then I worked the suds in with the rubber broom. Be gentle, you are just trying to lift the dirt from the top layer, the fleece.

The suds went all brown so I knew it was working! Then I hosed again to rinse it, and used the other side of the broom, which is a squeegee, to pull all of the excess water from the carpet. Do this on a hot day and you will have it washed and fully dry in about two hours!
