I have just invested in a chemical toilet for our camping expeditions and am wondering what you are supposed to do in terms of cleaning before storing it? I'm clear on what to do between uses at the site but what about before I put it back in the cupboard at home? Do you need to use different fluids for this? I don't fancy any 'residue' festering inside although obviously I would give it all a good rinse out. And what about drying out the tanks? Is it ok to put them away damp inside?
Advice much appreciated.

Just make sure it is clean inside by rinsing well. No need to use any particular cleaning products although you can buy chemical toilet cleaning stuff.
I just rinse really well several times until I can see it is clean inside (that is one reason why I love the Fiamma BiPot as it has a wide neck for filling and emptying)
During my camping season I don't bother making sure the inside is dry as it gets used quite frequently.
At the end of the season, I wash it out well and then leave the cap off for a couple of days to ensure the inside is dry before replacing the caps and storing it.

The blue fluid used in the holding tank has a purging effect & once emptied & flushed with water leaves the inside very clean indeed so no need to worry about bacteria. For the blade & other moving parts spray with some silicone lubricant.

I read that someone recommended a couple of scoops of Oxi washing powder and to clean the seals with olive oil. Seems to work for me!

I use Thetford cassette tank cleaner once a year.

You just put some in with warm water and give it a good shake and leave for a minimum of 16 hours.

They say it works well best if regularly agitated - so they suggest using it before heading home (if in caravan/motorhome) so the driving swishes it about in the tank.

I am a tenter and use this in my porta potti. I usually just give it a bit of a shake very few hours although I did put my porta potti in the boot of my car for a day this time, so make sure it got a good swishing!!
