Hi campers
We have lots of different types of battery operated torches/lanterns but they all give off such a cold white light. I really want a cosy glow instead like I've seen in other tents. I've looked in shops and only seem to find LED lighting which I think might be the problem. Is it possible to have warm lighting without EHU?

Well last year I spotted a post on Facebook. I'm going to try it out next weekend You fill up a milk jug (large 4pt one) with water then put your head torch onto it (shining into it) looks like it gives off a really nice warm glow!

Yes, I agree the vast majority of battery powered LED lamps give off a very bright (blue/white) light.
There are a few out there that give off a much warmer light. I use the ouwell Superior 400LX lanterns, they also do a cheaper '300' version. Both have a really nice warm light and last for ages on D Batteries. A bit pricy but well worth it.

You can get warm white LED lights that give off a nice glow.

I made my own camping lights from some SMD LED panels some, cable, a switch and a small board. I can power them from either 8 x AA batteries, a small 12v battery, a big leisure battery or even mains via an adapter!

When it gets dark I'll take some pictures of the warm white and bright white side by side.

Thanks for the replies :-)

Sarah, the milk jug idea sounds clever, will need to try that!

Jack, the outwell lantern looks good (and your bedroom setup looks so cosy!) although it does seem expensive. Might be worth saving for though.

Damien, I think I'd be too scared to play with wires etc! Its great you can do that though.

I love a gas light it gives a lovely war glow and it helps to heat the tent.

Just adding to this thread, I also use loads of 'warm white' led battery powered lights in all the tent pockets and anywhere else I can hang them! Never camp with EHU, but these give off loads of light and make the tent very welcoming at night. Also, they last ages on the batteries (easily a week). This is the inside of my Outwell Yellowstone Falls

Hurricane lamp, the type that uses paraffin and a wick.  Very warm light that you can vary by adjusting the wick, and it gives off a wee bit of heat too. Just transport it in a poly bag in case of wee leaks.
