If we're defining work as the amount of pegs/legs that can be driven there's more to the amount than voltage and battery capacity. Motor efficiency and gearbox design play an equal part so the higher end drills will have an added advantage in capacity over a budget design.
Then as already mentioned there's battery technology to take into consideration so we can't compare a 12v drill with an 18v without having all the facts.
I'd bet a four pack of beer my high end 10.8v 1.4Ah Li-ion drill would out work (in regards to camping use) a 1 year old budget 18v 2Ah NiCad.
By work I meant work in the SI description as it closely explains work in the quantity of pegs too.
You are however right there is also a quality issue too. i would hope my 18V 3ah Li-ion set that cost nearly £400 would out perform a wickes version that cost less than half the amount.
Hi Guys with all the power tools you carry your vans must be overloaded, Or do you just carry you tools and buy your clothes from local charity shop when you get to site and visit local food bank whats wrong with a ratchet spanner and 12mm or13mm socket to put in screw pegs. I dont have a problem at 74 I still use 19 mm brace and bit winder for my steadies, there again I started my vanning when you did,nt have toilets or showers in vans and your lighting was a gas mantle and cooking was done on a primus stove which had to be pumped up to get the pressure and the toilet was a bucket with a lid inside a home made wind break or a toilet tent if you was posh.

I don't use them for camping at all, I use mine to make furniture.
The one point people have forgotten is that the more expensive drills are made with better components to deal with the amount of use professionals throw at them, the Aldi drill for example would be alright for home use and the occasional camping trip, but let me loose in the workshop with it for a month and it'll die a horrible death (probably). However as the OP isn't building a house or creating a modern Chippendale, I would hazard a guess that £300 - £400 would be excessive to say the least. In a more budget range the Ryobi tools sold at B&Q seem to work very well and have decent stats and quality for the price.
My 10.8v driver with a 19mm socket on it weighs just under a kilo. I'd have said a regular leg winder weighs at least half that so no more than 500g more.
If I was that close to my weight limit and it was a choice of regular winder or drill driver I think I could just take a can of beer out of the fridge to get that extra 500g back.
Many thanks for all your responses which are all valued. What I have taken away is that OH is no DIYer we will so the drill will be used nearly exclusively for the legs and pegs so we will be choosing from the 'budget' range.
Now, however, we will not be quite so baffled when looking to buy and the sales person will not be able to sell us a drill made to make Chippendales!

A low voltage impact driver will out perform a lot of drills for putting tent pegs in.
I'm not sure other campers would appreciate the machine gun noise they make though.
Thank you Lockie
I posted this on another thread only last night - on a site at Easter some moron in a caravan at the other side of the hedge from me was winding up his corner steadies at 6am with one of these contraptions and the noise was horrendous. Definitely not funny!
So a polite request to anyone who does need to use one - please be considerate to other campers and use it at a reasonable hour
