Hi guys,

Off camping in a few weeks with our new outwell white cove 6 tent ( that is myself, hubby and toddler). Thinking about cooking and thinking a tarp might be a good idea for rainy evenings as I don't want to get the awning. I've looked at the vango adventure tarp but any thoughts on the subject would be appreciated! Been years since I've camped and the first time as a parent so trying to be organised!

Tarps are certainly a lot more flexible, as they can be set up separately some distance from the tent as well as (almost) attached to it.

I ended up getting a much bigger tarp than the Vango adventure, a Gelert poly-cotton tarp from Sports Direct.

Here it is suspended from the trees with a ridge line in addition to four king poles.

A similar-sized tarp from Obelink is also quite popular on this forum.

If you're set on getting the Vango, keep an eye on Nearlynewtents eBay store. They often put some up for auction or at a reduced 'buy it now price'. They deliver really quickly. This can be problematic if you're waiting for the right moment to admit to your other half that you've just splurged on more camping equipment.

Mostly it's a size thing, my friends have a similar size tent and sometimes end up paying extra for an extra large pitch. Also price and the fact we're not sure if we want one anyway, so I figure start with a cheaper tarp, see how we get on, make a decision later (if we decide to go for the awning ) when the budget is less strained!

The vango adventure tarp is a great bit of kit, but it ain't the biggest!

If you are looking for shelter over 1 cooker stand, and the person attending to it, then yes, it'll be great. However, if you also need to protect a side table/prep tabe/work top type thing, and/or are hoping to sit and eat under it too, then go for something bigger.

Vango Adventure tarp:



Wouldn't have got away with both cooker stand and table if it wasn't for the tent door canopy, unless the rain comes down vertically!

Works extremely well as an extension for an open fronted tent canopy, too...





But for a full kitchen, a 4m x 3m seems to be a good all round size, for many...
