We're fairly seasoned weekend campers but are planning a seven day trip to Cornwall from the North East of England in our Honda Civic with a five year old. We are on a budget and can not afford to buy a hard roof rack and box and to be honest I would prefer not to have the permanent rails on the Honda as I think it spoils the look of the car. Therefore, we've been looking at the soft racks and boxes and was wondering whether any of the other campers have a preferred brand or any hints and tips as there is quite a bit of choice out there.
Some report that the straps of the handirack wick water inside the car, so if its raining you may get wet.
Lidl/Aldi and other places do rigid roof bars from £20 upwards but fit a limited number of cars. Roofbox company do bars for £55 (Honda Civic 2006-11 - £30 for the bars plus £25 for the necessary fittings to fit the Civic). What about roof bars and a large suitcase/holdall (wrapped in pvc/bin bags) strapped to the bars?
The bars can be removed from the car when you come back off holiday (more fuel efficient and less wind noise).
I have been looking at these as I have mentioned in another thread.
I have a panaromic glass roof, so my car is not suitable for the soft racks out there, I have managed to get some bars for £11.50 off eBay, so worth keeping an eye out. Out little one is 4 so I understand how much you will need!
I have ordered the HandiDuffel along with the hard base to put on my roof bars which I think should be the perfect mix at the moment.
I am not sure if I would be happy putting anything directly on the roof plus the leak issue would be a bit annoying, additionally depending on the shape of your car the straps can get in the way of the driver and passengers.
