Hello everybody.

We are heading off for a long weekend to the new forest this weekend and I think I have most of the basics required - but I still don't have a lantern to hang in the tent (2.8m x 3.8m living area). Any advice on what to get that would illuminate the area would be greatly appreciated

There are so many lanterns out there it is difficult to know which to go for.

Thanks in advance.

Christina

We have one of These, and can highly recommend them.
3 x torch batteries. Has 2 x brightness control, but the lens cover screws off for two even brighter options, so effectively 4 brightness levels.
They come under various guises (different colours/brand names) but all identical, so shop around!

Apparently, it has a bigger, heavier, brighter brother, that takes 6 batteries (I think?)... and comes with a remote control!! Far too posh for us!

This might be OK in a well ventilated area (such as your tent appears to be?) but I must point out to other readers, particularly, but not exclusively, those who may have a sewn-in groundsheet, that there is a risk of carbon monoxide poisoning in using any gas appliance inside a tent.

I can't praise this one highly enough.  It lasts for about three evenings on full charge and it comes with 240v and 12v charging cables. Very bright and long lasting:

We use 2 of these which are great and really light up the tent and have a magnetic bottom so also helps if want to hang it up different.

Also have 1 of these this has been great as charge at home, in car on the way and then can leave outside to charge via solar panel at top or wind up if needed.

very good point there, and yes our tent is actually designed to have a fire in it. No fixed ground sheet low level air inlets and a vented top.
Flame colour is a good indication, a nice clear white light/blue flame means there is sufficient oxygen to burn off the carbon monoxide, whilst a pink or orangy flame may indicate incomplete combustion.
we always err on the safe side with a CO alarm

We have one of those too. Used to have two actually, but we lent one to daughter... about 18 months ago!! Brand new and unused at the time!!

Not as bright as the 300LX I recommended earlier. In fact we use it on the lowest of the two settings, when looking for the bucket a 3 am!! Perfect for a night light!
I wouldn't fancy having to read by it, or doing my knitting by () but for generally moving around the tent, or for outside over the kettle, it's more than good enough. And of course, it doesn't have the expense of needing batteries (Although I get mine for nowt, on works stationery account!! ) The only negative re the charging, is that there is no "Fully charged" indicator, but with all the charging options, I'd say it has to be a decent enough buy... just not as a reading light.

All IMO, of course!

I bought this solar lantern and have been impressed with it. Gives out a warm, but fairly bright light. Used it last weekend at Cub camp on night time patrols of our camp and saved me from falling down a rabbit hole! I was able to see it with my lantern unlike my friend who's normal torch was powerful enough at 3am!

So which ones would be good for reading, playing games, etc, without blinding you? I have 2 of those UFO LED nights (designed to go on a parasol or something similar) and they give some light but does glare a bit - maybe it's the way I hang them in the tent! lol I'm always jealous of my parents set up as they have EHU and a proper light bulb which gives a 'normal' light in their tent on a dark evening, but we can never achieve anything similar, even with multiple lights!

We use the following, which is very close to a "normal" light...

One of the following

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/141337868021?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

in an outwell merope run off a leisure battery.

All the other LED lanterns I've seen and own are a cold white light, we wanted a warmer colour for our main light.

I can recommend the Trinity from Alpkit. Runs off 4 x AA batteries, has variable brightness, built-in hanging clip and doubles as a torch. It gives off a nice warm-white light when in lantern mode and is more than bright enough when on full power. They also do a smaller unit of similar design that uses 3 x AAA called the Glowe, though I haven't tried that one myself.
