pressed the gas lighter button and not connected the gas. now it will not press and click is this because it is not connected to a gas supply. help appreciated a.s.a.p.

No, it has nothing to do with the gas supply, it just makes a spark near the gas jet. I have had them freeze up for a while then suddenly start working again but at worst you need to replace the ignitor.
