We
are heading off on our first weeks camping at the weekend, we have done long
weekends before but this will be out first week, so planning how to keep the
cool box cool for the this length of time has come in to it for the first time.
The campsite say they offer cool block exchange, I am just wondering how this
works? I guess all sites will be slightly different but what should I expect?
Take my cool blocks in when they defrost and they provide me with others, and
then swap them round throughout the week? If this is the case how do I know I end
up with mine back again?
Also another way of them making money is that they might only use their own, you pay them a deposit on the blocks and either get free re-freezing or they charge you 10p or whatever every time you freeze.
Some just have a freezer in an outbuilding where you just do it all yourself, but beware some people use them for their frozen food, not leaving much room for blocks.
And remember to try and take more blocks than you need so that you don't leave yourself short in your coolbox whilst others are freezing.
Take two lots of blocks. The ones you're using to take the food with you will be frozen, the others will not. Write your name on all of them with a Sharpie permanent pen. Put the defrosted ones in a tied up bag, again with your name on. Put the ones you're not using into the site freezer, then when needed, you have some ready frozen.
we also take twice as many blocks as we need so we can have half of them in our coolbox and the rest freezing in the on site freezer...all are marked up clearly with our surname and we've never had any go missing...

If you put your name on the blocks and place them inside a plastic bag (supermarket carrier is fine), there is less chance of someone "accidently" taking yours.

I would go a stage further than that and take three lots, especially if it's a self service freezer. the thing gets filled up with unfrozen blocks and people open it all the time, so it can take a lot longer than usual to freeze. Personally can't be bothered we just use bags of ice form the shops.
Thanks for the tips, blocks are all named up with a marker pen I am planning on taking quite a few blocks so will have to just wait and see how they work it at the site.
Phone the site and ask how it works. I've found different systems all over the place. And at least if you don't need 2 lots you don't need to take them. As the above poster states, write all over them with your name in an indelible pen.
