Roughly speaking if you multiply watts by 12 it gives you the lumens. So, a 40 watt bulb will be 480 lumens and a 60 watt bulb will be 720 lumens. You can see that 80 lumens will only be around 7 watts.
The only LED lantern worth it's salt imho is the Outwell 400LX also branded by Katmandu.
You can get much brighter battery operated fluorescent lanterns, but the Glow is stark and harsh and they drain batteries faster than LED.
The 400LX takes 6 "D" Cell batteries, so I run it on rechargeable's in fact we have 2 of the said lanterns, and carry 24 of the "D" Cells, you can pick up cheap rechargeable's from Lidl/Aldi or better still the interweb.
The 400LX uses 4 of the Bright Cree LED's giving out 400 lumens, which is about half as bright as a single mantel gas lantern, or equivalent to a 30 Watt light bulb in old money.
Due to a lucky price match at GO we paid £25 each for the 400LX's back in 2012.
And additional settings built in the case for it to glow.
The white, rubberized area will glow in darkness for up to 2 hours (with a full 20 minute charge from sunlight)
Also u can remove the globe for an even brighter light output
Seem like the best option, only take 3 x D batteries too
same price roughly as the Outwell 400LX, yet smaller and take less batteries, more settings/features. Does not have remote tho.
I've got this. For a solar lantern its fantastic, gave us enough light in our campervan to be able to read. There's a video on Youtube which I watched before ordering and I was really impressed.
Amazon reviews say it all. Batteries seem to last ages and the light is really bright. Not too expensive so we bought an extra one for the tent porch, may get one for the loft too!
