This depends on the type of 'booster' you have fitted.
The earlier Status 'booster', wasn't an amplifier at all, it was a remote power supply and could only be used with the Status 315 it was intended for, because the amp was in the aerial itself.
If the logo on the 'booster' is screen printed in a purple colour, it won't work, chuck it out.
If it's the later orange coloured logo, then it IS a full booster and would normally work, however they weren't hugely reliable and yours could well be dud (regardless of whether the power lamp is lit or not).
I would advise you buy one of the newer variable amps such as one of these from Fringe Electronics. Digital TV coverage is fairly good through the UK now, but the fixed level output boosters can actually provide too high a signal strength sometimes (which funnily enough can display a symptom like a weak signal), so a means of varying strength for best operation is the better idea.
