Not being funny, but priorities should be tent, then sleeping kit!
October can get cold of a night, and even with a fan heater going, it can often be "nippy" at the very least.
If you can run to it, try and get hold of a good quality fleece lined fisherman's sleeping bag.
As well as not being the cheapest, they are also thick and heavy, so unfortunately, that means big pack size. But if you can afford the money, and spare the room in the car, I can guarantee you will be delighted with the actual bag in use.
We have one of These apeice, and I assure you, despite having top class SIM's, polycotton tents and tarps, camp beds, and even a massive 7 seater car, pound for pound, these bags are the best bit of kit we have.
Too much for balmy summer nights, of course, but for cold Spring and Autumn nights, I sleep in shorts and short sleeve footy shirt, no socks. For full on winter, including snow, I upgrade to just one full layer... thermal bottoms and long sleeve top, thin socks, and a balaclava... and no, we don't have the heater on through the night!
At the very least, please get down to GO, and check them out.
As a warning though, they are top right...
Like I say, not small, but totally worth it, imo.
EDIT:
Just noticed that bit of white stuff on the drive! The photo's dated 1st April 2013, (Easter?) so that must be the time our Shrewsbury trip was cancelled due to the site being snowbound and pipes frozen, so we headed east to Yorkshire, Not a lot of difference between October, and April weather-wise, I'd say!

Seriously, if and when you find your own suitable solution to combat the cold, be it sat around in the evening or sleeping through the night, I'm tempted to say camping from Oct to April is at the very least, as enjoyable as the "more popular months".
Fresh air, in the truer sense. Crisp, healthy mornings. More often than not, a camping field all to yourselves... and the amenities, of course.
Do your research, and you could well end up at a camp site with heated loo/shower blocks... maybe even underfloor heating!!
There's even the added bonus of that "sense of achievement"... or at least, there was for us! 
Go for it... it's bloody fantastic!
