Hi.

I am buying a caravan in a month or so and will be kitting it out over winter to ready it for early next year. Although I am hoping to give it a try out in the October school hols to give me a better idea of how it all works and what we need/don't need.

But I have a few initial questions please.

1. Do you just have one aquaroll for water or would you have two so it is easier to just swap them over and refill the spare. Or are they too bulky so you just stick to one?

2. I see 'camping/caravanning' pans and kettles etc, do I have to purchase these special items? Can't I just buy a normal kettle and normal pans, similar to what I would use at home, but maybe a bit smaller and more lightweight.

3. Do you tend to have plastic plates/cups in your caravan or just normal ceramic and glass? I really have no idea what is the norm!

Thank you in advance xx

Most of your questions are really just personal preference.

1) I think most just have one aquaroll, but some do have two. We have one and that's fine for us. Just make sure it's full if you are planning to use the shower in the van.

2) You don't need special ones, just make sure your kettle isn't going to trip the electrics on site. You can get low power ones for caravans, or we just use the gas and have a whistling kettle.

3) We have Melamine ones, as they are light weight compared to normal ones and would do far less damage should they ever fall out the cupboard. The other option is something called Corelle. This is more like normal crockery but is meant to be light weight.

We use two aquarolls as it just makes it easier when one runs out.

We use an ordinary kettle and pans.

We use corelle plates and dishes as they have the feel of normal ceramic plates as well as being light and tough.

There will be 6 of us. 2 adults and 4 kids. I suppose we could use the shower blocks on sites for showers but it might be nice to be able to use our own in the van... I don't know what we will do actually? Do they take much water?
I don't want to run out of water all the time.

I will check the power on any kettle I get, I was just thinking of a cheapy basic supermarket one really. BUT I will read up and see what the maximum wattage is suggested.

I have never heard of corelle so will look into those thanks. I think I may have some melamine ones already in the attic with the camping stuff. I can't actually remember what we have left as we haven't been in the tent for many years, and have moved since.

Thanks for replies x

A lot of kettles seem to be 3 KW these days which is a problem.

Most camp site electricity supplies are limited to about 3.8KW (or 16 Amp)

That means that using a 3KW kettle, at the same time as (say) your water heater is running, might trip the supply.
(It's not an exact science since the supply will tolerate a bit of an overload)

Some sites are meaner and limit you to 2.3KW (or 10 Amp) so that 3KW kettle on its own might well trip the supply.

Some kettles (one example is the Argos "Value" one which costs five quid) only take 2.2KW which is much less likely to trip your supply - it just takes a few seconds longer to boil.

I think it's worth looking for a low wattage kettle because it just saves some hassle.

If the supply does trip, just reset the switch at the supply box (UP is ON, DOWN is OFF).

I bought all my pans from ikea. They are cheap and light weight.
Our kettle is a travel kettle, as my husband is the only one that drinks tea.
I bought our melamine plates from a charity shop and cups from ASDA in the sale. I have some large pasta bowls that are Corelle, perfect for eating curry etc.
We use the onsite showers as our bathroom is a tiny wetroom style bathroom/toilet. Can't be doing with the hassle of getting it all wet. As a result use little water, so only one aquaroll for us. Even do our washing up at the site sinks.

Dont see the need for 2 aquarolls, if you have 2 then you have to go to the water point twice each time, or if you fill each time one is empty then its the same as one ???
And do we then have 2 waste water containers???

We have 2 aquarolls. We fill them both up at night and then in the morning there is no risk of running out mid washes.
Especially if its the usually british summer and raining.

I have one waste container, Its on wheels and holds a lot.

Easy option, Start with one and see if you need a 2nd one.

1 Aquaroll, normally when the aquaroll is empty the wastemaster is full so empty and fill on the same trip.

Corelle and melamine plates and bowls.

Camping saucepans that came from the tent.

A sunncamp low wattage kettle and a kettle to go on the gas if we have no ehu.

You start with two full and when the first one runs out just swing the second one across and fill the empty one when you want. Having used one aquaroll for years, two is better - especially when one runs out late at night. Just one waste container - they don't fill as soon as an aquaroll runs out.

We bought a. Tesco value kettle and toaster. The kettle does take a
Little longer than the home kettle. Bought a rubber door mat with lots of holes (if that makes sense) to stand our Aqua rolls on. Keeps the bottoms cleaner for packing away. Plates and bowls are plain white (thin) basic range from Asda. Cheap as chips to replace if you need to. Nothing has fallen out of the racks so far. Personally don't like eating off plastic
