For use on EHU we have a BulkHead Lantern fitted with 105watt Halogen Bulb, far to bright on full tilt, so it is controlled with an inline rotary dimmer switch, and a double pole inline rocker switch for on/off, and a 7m length of rubber 1.5mm cable terminated with a std 13amp Plug fitted with 3 amp fuse. easy DIY build for under £20.
When there is no electric we use 2 of the Outwell 400LX lanterns that take 6 of the "D" Cell batteries each so we use rechargeable batteries, due to a lucky price match at GO we got the Outwell lanterns at £25 each.
Although at 400 Lumens the 400LX using 4 Cree LED's is only half the brightness of a Single Mantle Gas lantern.
Having said the 400LX runs forever.
You can get brighter fluorescent lanterns say 7 watt so 800 lumens, which is about the same brightness as a single mantle gas lantern, but the batteries are quick to drain, and the glow is stark and harsh, and seems to attract every flying insect for miles around.
Aldi have some 200 LED workshop lights in at the moment, so that could be worth a view.
