Bought a kamei husky xxl from gumtree, week before bank holiday, was new in box, £200

Used it, sold it on gumtree for £190

Bargain!

Sat in my garage is my smaller roofbox that was new on eBay for £50 4 years ago, bargain!

As long as the fixings are secure and not loose or overtightened then it will be safe.
More risk of not closing it properly and locking it.

Fitting the bars etc is the risky bit. Your leaning over the car rubbing against it.
If you wear clothing with buttons, zips and buckles then they can scratch the car.

My sister had a lovely scratch down the drivers door from her hubby's belt buckle and damage on the roof from his wristwatch.

He is a clumsy oaf though.
   That made me chuckle
