Hi

Just looking for the last peice of advice before i start my trailer project.

I would like to increase the trailers viz by adding extra lights.

Ideally something like

motorbike lights

It this within the law to essentially have 4 indicaters and 4 rear lights?

The lights on the trailer i bought as a base unit are very low to the ground and a little paranoid about having the 3 kids and the mrs at risk if some idiot tailgates and the car behind him cant see the lights they are that low.

You can have extra lights but I think they have to be E marked, ie Euro compliant. Any trailer lights you buy from say Halfords or any other automotive supplier should be E marked whereas the ebay lights from Hong Kong might not be.

Might be picked up in the unlikely event of being stoped in a Vosa check so your choice really. Otherwise as long as red sidelight & amber indicator lights are showing at rear you are ok.

Easiest way is to buy a lightboard & bolt that to rear of trailer then you know everything is legal.

Dont forget that double the lights = double the load. What fuses / wiring gauge does your car have?

You dont want to keep blowing your fuses or risk burning out your wiring.

Good points

I was going to change all the lights to led to keep the power down.

I can get those lights in the uk from m&p just looked nice and neat to use as an extra blinkers and break light.

I just dont want any stupid driver smashing into the back of us and for the car behind to be able to see we are either stopping/turning.

Just waiting for my finish date at work so i can start this project.

Don't think electrical overloading would be a problem as the unit in the link uses LEDs, BUT it appears to be a single unit (as advertised for motorcycle use) and it looks as if the spacing between the various lights, and their distance from the sides of the trailer, might well make it illegal if used as the OP envisages.

"Motor vehicles first used on or after 1 April 1986 and trailers manufactured on or after 1 October 1985:

    side repeater within 2,600 millimetres of the front of the vehicle;
    front and rear indicators normally not more than 400 millimetres from edge of vehicle;
    at least 500 millimetres apart (400 millimetres if vehicle is not more than 1,400 millimetres wide);
    at least 40 millimetres from any headlamp or fog lamp;
    not more than 1,500 millimetres from the ground (2,300 millimetres if this is impracticable);
    at least 350 millimetres from the ground."

There's plenty of vehicles around with multiple clusters on them. How big is your intended trailer though?

Some potential useful info can be found on the NTTA website.

It was more the indicator bits i wanted rather than the rear assembly part.

So they cant go higher than 150cm 4'9" from the ground.
