We bought a cheap roof bag and was worried about it all the time it was on the roof, the straps flap about and if I was worried about my car would be concerned about damage to the paintwork. We have since bought a trailer although at the point where a roof box may be needed soon.
I would also be concerned about how waterproof a bag can be, we were lucky with the weather the one time we used ours.
I think they are a good idea, but would never use one we have a Kamei Delphin 380lt RoofBox not huge but does the job, and keeps the car to under 2m in height, and it is almost silent even at 81mph.
I can't see a roof bag being aero dynamic let alone quiet, and not being sure of the vehicles overall height would be of concern to me.
I'm not sure which reviews I've seen, maybe amazon or Argos, but they were pretty negative. I think you'd need to have a scout around some reviews before you make a decision.
I had considered a purchase but ruled it out based on the reviews.
Pro's: Easy to store away when not in use. Lighter than a roofbox. No need to buy roof bars if purchased with the inflatable roof bars.
Cons: Concerned about water-resistance, so everything was 'sealed' in black plastic bags (that were re-used on holiday). Concern was unwarranted as we drove through rain without anything becoming damp.
We changed to a smaller car, so ended up with a trailer. Have given ours to friends now - they love it.
------------- You have to be cruel to be unkind.
Kinky is using using a feather; wierd is using a whole damn chicken!
We got one of these last year and it is not worth comparing these to the cheaper types you see on eBay.
Our bag fits perfect on our Smart ForFour and with a couple of ratchet straps its not going anywhere, if you use the excess strap to make it more secure there is no flapping.
We took ours though rain & wind and have no water get in so all good there. Its surprising how much you can fit in one too, just make sure you can lift it on / off.
Hi, I too can recommend the HandiHoldall, we have used ours for the last 4/5 years and it enables us to take everything we need without having to pay for a tow bar/trailer or roof bars/boxes.
Thanks everyone, I'd read both Good and bad, but good to hear real stories from fellow campers. I do like the fact that it can be in the boot and used if needed. Especially as I have a 7 seater and if I need all the seats have no boot.
