I have just received a booking form for exhibiting at Pickering Steam Rally and they INSIST that generators be either diesel or LPG, absolutely NOT petrol. I couldn't go 4 days without needing to recharge batteries and don't fancy shelling out on a solar panel or another generator on top of the two I already have. Has anybody tried running a petrol generator on LPG? The car I intend exhibiting runs on petrol or LPG so why can't a generator?
I have considered putting a calor gas bottle next to the generator with a bit of blanked off pipe going into the innards of it just to make it LOOK like it runs on LPG...

Health and safety i expect. Maybe they have had an incident with the extra petrol stored for use.

There is a distinct smell when running on LPG. If they enforce the ban on petrol you maybe asked to leave.

Why cant you manage 4 days on a battery? We did 2 weeks on a battery in 2013.


Is the generator a 4 stroke one? There are kits available, I would imagine the best part of £200 though.

If it is a Steam Rally, why not connect a small steam engine to a genny?

I'd echo that..

Unless you're running a stall of sorts and have display lights and kit to run, 4 days should be doable as a "camping punter"..(..we routinely managed a week plus, off hook-up).

If you are really going to be pushed, then I'd maybe look at an additional leisure battery?..and just cut back on your overall usage..  ?

Yes, I thought bottle or tank had to feed from the bottom to supply engine with the gas still in liquid form but small generators appear to use a standard Calor propane bottle as in the picture with reasonably straightforward diy fitting. It looks a simple enough solution for the op if his generator has a suitable conversion kit available.

Thanks for replies. Rather than go to the expense of a conversion kit I might as well just run the car and have a 3.5 litre 160HP generator...
