Hi, We have just bought a 2006 swift conquerer 630sal and we are not sure how to masure for an awning. Do we measure the length of the rail to the floor,or can anyone recommend either a new or used supplier for our caravan. We would be appreciate any advice, cheers Woody5

you measure by putting a peg in the ground at the front of the van just under the awning channel, then with the string follow right the way around and then back down to the floor, then take the string and get the total length of that
you just need to make sure on the roof part of the channel on the size and that it doesn't foul a window
and on the size of your van anything smaller than a 390 will look like its been in a hot wash! belive me we have a large van too and tried and looked rediculous
For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013
I use electric cable that just slides through awning channel some strings stretch.
I also measure from awning channel vertically through centre of wheel as some caravans are different heights.
If my around channel measurement is very close to top or on top end of a awning size I buy next size up.
this allows for any difference in ground level after van is levelled up.
I once had a pitch in Cornwall were the awning was too long at the rear of the van and the tuck under mud flap at the front was off the ground I only had to use this pitch for a day and night before being moved to a fairly level pitch hence I did not finish erecting the awning but took it down till the move.
The site owner returned two nights awning fees for my inconvenience as I had booked 10 nights van and awning.
I would use this site again but insist on a guaranteed pitch at top of field or one of pitches nearest site office before booking and paying deposit with debit card.

its always wise to check the caravan correctly rather than make a costly mistake relying on some website details!
There is some sense in this but the Isabella website is a collection of manufacturers lstated lengths matched to the corresponding awning. It is a database that goes back over thirty years and has always proved accurate for me.

There is reference to making sure a porch type awning "doesn't foul a window", but there are other threads which say there is no reason to avoid it, apart from the obvious, that you can't open that window. In fact some liked the fact you could see inside and outside the awning at the same time!
Some were worried it would scratch the window in the wind, but others have said it never has, but others have said they put a very soft cloth between canvas and window just in case.
Personal choice then.
