Interesting move by the Australians here, I imagine the UK ones are of the same design as they all come from China!

'Suitcase stoves' here I guess? In previous threads I recall it was suggested it is not safe to use large pans that overhang on these types of cooker as they cause overheating & possible fire risk.
All you have to do is use a bit of common sense. If it looks wrong, it is wrong....don't do it.
I have used one for a couple of years, not just for camping, but for BBQing as well, doing the veg and onions on. They are safe if used right.
My mate has to use one down his shed if he wants kippers for Sunday breakfast, his missus banned them from the house.
------------- Trying is the first step towards failure!
I agree Martyn (..and we've used and still use them)
But the report that NickH linked to, is pulling them up for faulty valves, and not the risk of "over hanging" pans..
Quote:
“Testing, undertaken at the request of NSW Fair Trading and other State gas regulators, has found a fault with the cookers’ shut-off valves, posing a risk that the devices may overheat and could explode....."
Those ones are sold in NSW. People can only speculate What the problem is.
I have continually used minę for 9 years.
Never come across over heating, no idea What that means.
Problem arises when people dont actually read the instructions.
Ie, not inserting the cartridge correctly and using oversize pans which will partially or cover the cartridge cover, flames will spread causing overheating therefore causing a gas explosion. It is not faulty equiptment just carelessness, we have heared many people have done.
You cannot legislate against against idiotic behaviour.

We are users and fans of these types of stoves(..a couple of ours must be nearing 10 years old?)...but some that are being sold now are noticeably "cheap'n' nastier"....
(having said that, we've always steered clear of the unbranded-Sunday Market stall types...)
..and if the manufacturers can/have cut back on the noticeable quality - such things as the main body and pan support etc- I suppose it is feasible that some would also be cutting back when it comes to the quality of the valve work..?
..and as NickH says, the ones sold here will probably come out of the same factories as the ones in Oz...
It'll be interesting to see if this filters through/across......
