I have been looking at tarpaulins to use as a footprint. My tent is 580x320.some of the tarpaulin I've looked at are really expensive. Can I use a cheap one from b&q? For our first hol we will be camping on grass. We are hoping to travel through Europe at a later date and may be pitching on sand or gravel. Any help would be appreciated

I bought a budget tarp from Tarpulines Direct for use as a primary groundsheet to give the tent's PVC zipped in groundsheet extra protection against sharp stones etc. and it is still going strong after 4 seasons.

To put on the ground to keep underside of tent clean you can use a cheap plastic tarpaulin or cheaper still use a plastic dustsheet from B&Q, only about 3quid, if its muddy when you leave just roll it up & chuck it in the skip.

Be careful with lightweight tarpaulins or plastic sheets...I have seen a few flying high across fields on windy days.

I guess for grass, a cheap job will do, but for gravel, the more protection you have the better, and a cheap tarp might not be enough.

I tend to use a disposable 'dust sheet' then a cheap tarp, then the footprint (!)... but that's just me, looking after the SIG.

I don't know how much you are willing to spend but Tarpaulins Direct, also selling on Amazon as Bradshaws Direct, do a 'topgrade tarpaulin', 200gsm which is good quality. A 6m x 4m would be £28.

We use a blue tarp from ARCO, who supply to the building trade (but anyone can buy from them). Eyelets are handy for pegging it down at the corners.
