2nd trip out as caravanners and first time with a TV. Running a Smart TV off a digital aerial that is built into our new Elddis caravan. Some channels are so pixelated that they are unwatchable. A small number are OK as long as we don't move and don't turn on any lights! If we do move, it takes several minutes for the pixrlation to settle down agsin. Thinking it might just be a rubbish area for a signal (Auchenlarie in SW Scotland) but want to avoid this frustration in future. Do we need a satellite system...and any suggedtions which one? Thanks in advance :0)

The reception in that area is not good.

We were at a site not far from there and some parts of the site had good reception whilst other parts of the site had no reception.

Thanks Bernie. Do you think this area is exceptional in terms of bad reception; or in your experience can digital be hit and miss? For our short/ weekend breaks, we'll typically be within 1.5 to 2.5 hours of Edinburgh.

I have had no problems with the sites that I use in the Edinburgh area.

Dumfries however receives the signal from Caldbeck in Cumbria and there are quite a few hills in between, parts of Cumbria cannot even get a decent signal.

Have you got one of those new Avtex Omni directional aerials (the one you don't have to adjust). We have and sometimes it's great others we get nothing. There's a lot of negative feedback on here about them.

Yep, ditch the TV aerial and get a Dish, for Scotland and the whole of UK my choice would be either a SELFSAT flatt panel antenna or a Arcon Sweety Dish, both are small and easy to pack away compared to say a regular 50cm Dish.

I would avoid using a Sky mini-dish, although many folk use them whilst camping, but they soon pick up dings etc due to the mesh construction, fine on the side of your house, but not really intended for mobile use.

As for reciever go for the SAB Titan Micro a tiny FTA receiver that can work of 12v and will also work as a Recorder and do Pause Live TV etc.

We have a Humax Foxsat Freesat Recorder satellite receiver, which is fine but quite a large unit.

You will have no problem getting a good satellite signal anywhere in Scotland, providing that you have clear line of sight to the Bird.

Last year they made it so a Zone 1 Sky mini-dish will work anywhere in the UK, previously the larger 54cm Zone 2 Sky mini dish was recommended for use in Scotland.

In which case I'd follow Francais' advise and go for a satellite system. The omni directional aerials just aren't as good as the status aerials. We've just had the weekend at Troutbeck Head CC site and our aerial picked up no channels at all. Fortunately the EHUs had boosted aerial points. We have an old Maxview sat system for France which we might now start using in the UK.

Thanks Graeme and Francais - great advice!  Funny thing is, we were never going to have a TV in our caravan and we used to poke fun at folk sitting watching TV in theirs.  Then after caving in to the TV and one wet weekend with no signal...

Yep Lainey, I mostly use the satellite system for Radio when we are in the South of France.

It's a real pity that the Satellite radio system came to an end, you could buy a small Radio that had an Antenna the size of a beer mat, and that could pick up BBC and UK commercial Radio anywhere in Europe, in fact the signal even went as far as Africa.

They have the system in America called SiriusXM, it's a great system, and I really don't understand why there is not a European version.

If the Satellite Radio system was still going, I would not have the faff of taking a 1m Satellite Dish with us.

Good shout, but yes I did. Although we were on the west coast of Scotland, we were picking up channels from Northern Ireland, so I think the signal was probably quite weak and bad weather didn't help. What got me was the fact that when we managed to get a good picture, it would stay as long as we didn't move or turn on any lights! Not sure I want to repeat the frustration!

If you are going down the sky route, look out for a sky installer van. They usually hold replaced / second hand but good decoder boxes which punters have upgraded to new HD+ etc.
Installers are usually self employed and will supply you with box. dish, cable, LNB and all you need to get set up for £50 or so.
That's been my experience and I have spoken to a few installers over the years. You will need to buy a tripod separately.

One quick though. If the signal drops when you move around make sure you have a quality cable between the wall socket and the TV. We bought a shielded Lindy cable from Amazon. This improved things in our last van but doesn't help with the Omni directional aerial.
