Hi
We are going to the south of France this summer and campsite we are staying on is a forest next to a beach so the ground is very sandy.

I understand that I should use sand pegs? Can anyone confirm this is correct and where a good place a get them is? I have been on ebay but they want £10 - 15 for a pack of 10 which seems extreme as I will need 50 plus

Thanks
Darren

I go to Montalivet on SW coast with sand pitches. Best pegs are 18inch long wood pegs. I got a load last time I went to Holland about 7€ for 10 but they seem dearer in UK. A cheaper substitute & not so good which I have also used are 12inch plastic pegs, google search suppliers.

If you are using wood pegs, round off guy line slots with a round file to prevent chafing & when you pull them out allow to dry out properly for a couple of days before bagging or they will rot.

If you are pitching in soft sand then you need depth, pegs as long as poss. Other suggestions might be sand filled bags or pegs buried horizontally & so on but wood pegs as long as poss. are what you need.

for Where the ground is to soft buy some cheap nylon childrens pump bags, the type that has a draw string at the top.
fill with sand and anchor your tent down with them

Sometimes very long pegs might work, but the best way to anchor things in the sand is to use sand bags. All you need to take with you are the empty hessian bags, some lengths of paracord and a shovel.

When you arrive, fill your bags with sand, place the bags into the holes from when you've dug the sand. Wrap paracord around each bag and fasten the other ends of the cords to your guy lines. Then fill the holes back in. This will provide very secure anchoring for your tent, which you may need with those strong coastal breezes!
