hi
we are going away bank holiday and we are going to take a hairdryer with us, will it be ok to use this with the electric hook up or does it need to be a different voltage than we use at home.
Mrs Francais uses one bought from Aldi, I think it is just 600watt so fine on for use on campsite electric, it draws just over 2amp.
Probably useless in the UK, but fine in the South of France during July, in fact I don't understand why she needs it in the first place, but hey what do I know, I am just a Bloke!
Please take a look at this at the bottom of which is a watts to amps conversion chart. Your hairdryer should have it's wattage stamped on it somewhere. Convert that to amps and make sure whatever you use does not exceed the amps that the campsite is supplying. Campsites may supply 10 amps or 16 amps and in some cases only about 5 or 6 amps so you need to ask the campsite what their supply is when booking.
A hair-dryer or straightener has a heating element in it, therefore, I would avoid using it while boiling a kettle or using a fan heater or an electric cooker, unless I can be certain not to overload the electricity supply.
Knowing the power consumption and amperage draw for each appliance will enable one to avoid overloading the EHU as already mentioned by the others.

Dont also forget your EHU unit in the tent will have a limit as well, usually 10 or 16amp (10amp being most common) so if your EHU is 10amp even though the campsite is 16 amp you would still be limited to 10.

I found a hair dryer invaluable when we were tenting........rarely used it for my hair as the damp weather made that a useless exercise.......but used it during the evenings to keep us warm!!!!!!!!

My rule of thumb is don't use two appliances that generate heat together, so I use my hairdryer from home but don't use it at the same time as the electric heater.
I have used the hairdryer at the same time as having the coolbox plugged in or at the same time as charging a mobile and this has been fine.
No problems tripping electrics so far and as long as I have my EHU with built in trip protection I figure that if I trip the electrics, it should only mean I have to reset my EHU and not trip the whole campsite.

It is good that people are asking about EHU. There are a couple of similar threads running at the moment. Hopefully they get some good informative answers and can then treat electricity in tents with respect armed with a little knowledge.
At the same time it is scary that there seems to be an awful lot of people who use EHU who haven't got a clue. Some seem to have been using it for a long time and their only rule of thumb is that they haven't tripped the electrics yet. Hopefully they too will glean some good information from these boards and play safe.

Yes i agree that is is good to look at the pinned posts regarding EHU and the safe use of it as i have done. All i am saying is that you need to be sensible with what you have on at any one time.
