Our camping equipment has outgrown our car boot and roof rack! Any suggestions on trailers please? Also, anything we should be aware of when considering tow bars etc.

Thanks!

I have the same query too! I've done a little bit of research and lots of calling around local garages, these guys http://www.indespension.co.uk said they would price match for tow bar fitting & seemed to have a good range of new and second hand. Not checked Halfords or Go Outdoors yet.

You pays your money and makes your choice.

For a towbar with dedicated electrics 13pin socket expect to pay £400+

Or the old fashioned way, relay bypas and a fist full of scotch lock connectors, expect to pay £250 max.

Swan Neck or Flange, well I go for Swan Neck it looks neater.

If your running an older vehicle then Bypas system will be fine, but if your vehicle is still under mfctr warranty, or you have a firms car, then the pukka dedicated electrics is the way to go.

As for trailer, if the budget will stretch 5ft x 3ft 6" min size, "A" frame chassis with 13" wheel, Side Extentions and ABS Lid expect to pay £1000 or £500 used.

Who said camping was for cheap skates!

This is our first year camping, and realising everything wouldn't go in the car, plus next year we thought we'd venture to france, we brought an anssems GT500 trailer with hardtop:[URL=http://www.bdstrailers.co.uk/cgi-bin/bdst.cgi?Wish=FFFF00500207000002171957]
Being aluminium, hubby said it would keep better and has 13" wheels - tows a dream, no nodding around. Holds all stuff and doesn't leak, locks too. Next idea - roof bars to put the bikes on. Not cheap, but a top trailer.

Can echo the above about the GT500 worth looking on ebay and gumtree too.

As for towbars, I wend for a detachable as I hate shin breakers as a permanant fixture and them living up to their name.

Consider using a local reputable firm to fit, I used witter's website to get an idea on price and it worked out cheaper! and was reffered to a witter authorised independant company that fitted it.

I've had tow bars fitted to 3 cars by my nearest Anssems dealer. Good price and very good job every time. First was a fixed, after which I learned my lesson so the others have been detachable.

Another vote for Anssems trailers, whilst I'm on...

Also a reminder to buy something at least twice as big as you think you need. That idea has served me for the first 5 years of trailer ownership, but I've recently had mine expanded by 50%....making it 3 times what I originally thought I needed. Should do for the next few years hopefully!

Also regarding adding bars to the top of them - worth talking to the dealer, as I did, to see if he can manufacture something permanently attached - might be better and / or cheaper than standard roof bars.

Many "new to trailer" questions answered in previous related threads.
