Hi peeps
Many thanks for the very helpful replies, think I know a bit more about solar panels now than I did yesterday Can`t think of anything else 12v to turn off/isolate?? like Paul says might be a duff controller or some feature with the master panel I`ve missed ?? will report what Coachman says.
best
Steve

Grampian could be on the right path, the charge controller could potentially be at fault and drawing from the battery. My controller shuts down when the output from the panel drops too low (thus no draw from battery), but you could have a dud, OR something else is drawing the battery down that you've missed.

In my case there is nothing else to it. Its on a bench in the shed with a south facing window.

One panel, one controller and one battery. Disconnect the panel and the LED's on the controller are still powered. One issue is that the battery is a bit weak and not in the best of health, but it will charge up and hold a charge for a reasonable time. With the controller its only lasting a few days before its dropping half a volt.

And next to that is a different model of controller with a 4w+1.2w panel with a better battery and even that battery has dropped very slightly over a few days.
The controllers LED's stay on at night with that one also.

I need to connect a proper ammeter, My current one takes its power from the battery you connect it to.

Hello Steve,

I have the exact same problem as you have (same van also). I have found the battery discharged twice whilst parked up between outings. The caravan does use some 12v power when everything is switched off. Stuff like the intruder alarm (whether armed or not!), the fridge control panel, etc, still are connected and draw a small amount of power.
I picked my Coachman up in April from Glossop Caravans. The van is currently back with them to fix the problem but they say there is no fault. One thing I have noticed though is that the LED for the Sun is not lit as brightly as the one for the battery. In fact I did suspect it was just reflecting the light from the adjacent LED for battery 1 but it wasn't. I am going to phone Solar Tech who make the controller on Monday so I will let you know what they say. Have you heard back from Coachman yet? I'd love to hear what they come up with.
Regards,
Bern

Hi Bern
I contacted Coachman who said we should get 3-4 months from the panel no problems trickle charging the battery and recommended we take it to dealers. Had the van there yesterday and they told us the Sargent alarm is faulty and apparantly its looking for the fob all the time ???. They have disconnected the alarm for now awaiting one from Sargent. I`m not totally convinced with this at the moment but we`ll see how the battery does for now and see if it keeps its charge. Will let you know how we get on. Strange a similar fault with the same van?. I had been trying it with and without the alarm set didn`t seem to make a difference but if its faulty maybe they are right?
cheers
Steve

That sounds like a bit of tosh, however depending on the alarm model, those units do periodically top-up their on board battery from the leisure battery, so it's possible there's a charging fault. I'd contact Sargent as their support is excellent and they'll explain how to monitor alarm unit for proper operation, current draw etc.

There's mention in an above comment too, of the fridge control panel still being active. This shouldn't be the case and again, depending on fridge make/model, you should be able to turn the control/fridge panel fully off. For example, on my current Thetford unit, you press and hold the main on/off button for several seconds to shut the unit down. That said, there's clearly some background running to allow it to be turned back on again!

I'm not too familiar with Coachman's, but I'm suprised there isn't means to fully shut down the 12v electrics, as it does sound to me like your battery is under a drain somewhere. Even considering the constant draw of the charge controller, I can't think that this is causing your problem.

Thanks Steve for the info'.

I was surprised to read the response you got from Solar Tech. If you manufacture a component, that component must be connected up and used in the way in which it was designed. I don't have my van as it is at the dealers at the moment so I can't check, but I don't remember that many connections on the controller that would allow a variation in how it could be wired up, apart from the choice of one or two batteries. I suspect that maybe Solar Tech may have one employee that knows this particular product in detail and that he was on holiday on the day you phoned them! I will raise the issue with the same range of people that you have and maybe they will realise that it is not a one off situation.
I will let you know the responses I get. I'd be grateful if you could post your findings when you get the replacement alarm unit from Sargent.
Regards,
Bernie

Hi guys
Yes I was a bit `mmmmmm???` when they mentioned the alarm but we`ll wait and see, I wouldn`t have thought Sargent would hand out new alarms willy nilly. Might be a Coachman thing if Bern has the same van with the same fault or maybe a batch of faulty alarms??. I`ll let the dealer do all the phoning around for now!.

Hello again all,

I have a solar panel that works!!!!!!!!!!
It turned out that the cause was a dodgy leisure battery. I was told by the dealer that they had fixed the fault by replacing the solar panel controller and I could come and collect my caravan. When I got there, I checked out the system and found the battery had 1.5 volts on it. Not quite the charge that I was hoping for. A further call by their technician to the solar panel manufacturer (SolarTech...I found them very helpful and highly recomended btw) and the leisure battery was replaced. TaDa! Suddenly the voltage on the battery was responding to the level of sunlight. It drops slightly overnight but as soon as the sun pops out, up goes the charge being supplied to the battery and happy days!
Maybe this could be the way to go for others.
Good luck,
Bern

Glad you got sorted Bern, we have JUST had our alarm changed which seems to have sorted our problem too.
I think I must have got someone on an off day at Solar Tech (we all av em!). I was also having problem with the power mover being a bit hit and miss but that turned out to be a loose connection on the battery which then made me start thinking about the original fault ?? could that have contributed to the apparent `no charge` from the panel?? who knows? anyway we seem to be ok for now ;-)
best
Steve

Hi guys
Well went to check our van today after a month in storage and looked at the charger controller lights showing the state of charge ... `RED LIGHT`noooooo!
Ruddy thing ;-(.I`ve even had the alarm turned off and the charging part is showing green indicating the panel is charging??. My own inner engineer thoughts say its the leisure battery despite it being bought new and our Dealer has checked it twice!!. I was a bit doubtful that the alarm was at fault but these folk know better than us don`t they???
Back to the dealer ;-((

Ouch!
Not a good development Steve. I suspect you may be right in that the leisure battery has been the problem all along. Certainly it was in my case. My caravan and battery were both new when purchased in April. It would seem that the batteries ain't wot they used to be.
Hope you find your solution soon.
Bern
