We no longer buy DVDs, instead for home use we buy films off itunes and play on the TV via Apple TV or Airplay. Does anyone know if when on holiday we can watch the films on the ipad/iphone through our portable TV (without wifi)? The TV is new and has HDMI, but I'm confused about what we might need, assuming it can be one.
It depends on what iPad you have as to which lead you need (I think the Lightning Bolt connector was introduced with the iPad 4)
Also there's genuine Apple leads (more expensive) and cheaper third party leads.

Alternatively if you have a good data deal on your phone you could set up a personal hotspot and "tether" your apple TV to your phone.
If you are only wanting to stream movies from an iPad to the Apple TV without the need for a cable, you can use your phone to create a hot spot and then connect the iPad and Apple TV to this Wi-Fi network. You don't need a good data deal on your phone unless you will be accessing the online features of the Apple TV as just streaming from iPad to Apple TV via the phones hotspot doesn't use any data.
I would try this out first though as the Apple TV may try and use the internet connection to display content on the home screen. Safest solution would be to disable the data connection on your phone.

Don't create a hotspot to stream the movies, the data transfer will be massive. The best most portable way will be with a cable from your iPad to your TV.
Why not download the films at home then watch them while you are away using the cable suggested.
buy a cheap cable from e bay if its just for the holidays.
