Went camping for the first time last year & ended up buying a cheap stripey windbreak, but the ground was so hard we had trouble getting the windbreak to stay up.

What we needed was something which we could hammer into the ground first to make the holes for the windbreak a decent depth - any ideas please?

I use windbreak spikes which screw into the ground and then the windbreak stands in these. Bought mine from Towsure.

Replace the wooden poles with thick metal plant support poles bought from a garden centre and whack them in with a lump hammer.

This type of pole works a treat



Alternatively just use guy ropes on the existing poles.

Lol - I once bought a cheap windbreak on Ebay and although the material was pretty good the wooden poles were like matchsticks. I bought some metal plant poles and they worked a treat. Whack them in with a lump hammer and they won't go anywhere.

...getting them out again is the difficult bit

You can buy windbreaks with metal spikes on the bottom and metal rings at the top - however they do cost a bit more.

See if you can get hold of some fencing pins..

We've used half o' dozen (acquired and donated by a surveyor mate),cleaned up and painted, for several years now and never had a problem getting them in, or out again...

..and the "Shepard's crook" tops are ideal for hanging lantern(s)

 ( or bunting or prayer flags or fairy lights etc etc, if you feel so inclined...which I'm not )
