I want to buy a Garmin sat nav for walking. I want it to be reliable and easy to use. I want to be able to download nice walks into it without having to worry too much about finding my way.
Looking on line there is a big price range, I don't want to spend a fortune but want something recent.
I have no idea at the moment.
I will of course carry a map and compass in case it let's me down.
I use Memory Map on my Android smartphone. Perfect for the job. I plan routes on my computer again using Memory Map then transfer it to the phone. You can also print the maps out. Currently you can buy the whole country at 1:25000 for £200.
It works far better than any of the Garmin I've seen.
If you were to get a Garmin etrex 20 or 30, or one of the gps map 60 series of hand held gps units you can download the entire country for free from the talkytoaster website. It uses open source maps and in my opinion is just as good as the maps available from Garmin or OS. I use these for Geocaching and walking in general, if used in conjunction with a good map you won't go far wrong. Also you can overlay user created routes to follow.
------------- Dance before the storm and don't look back to where you've been.
If you can keep your head when all around you are losing theirs, you obviously haven't grasped the gravity of the situation.
Hi. We use the etrex 20 for geocaching and have talkytoaster maps downloaded too. Great good value gps IMHO x
