We're thinking of getting one of these for the back of our car to help carry some of our camping load.

It sits on an Easy Base which can then be converted to a bike rack, just FYI.

Anyone have one and have any experience of it? Good points/bad points? Thank you.

I don't have a Thule, but recently bought a Bak-Rak. Very easy to fit. Basic model can take 100kg. I have Outwell Concorde which I put on the rak (saves loads of space in the boot) plus also put son's bike on there as well

They do loads of attachments including a box

Close.   Had the Easy Base and the soft bag version, not the hard box. Only used it a couple of times, as we ended up getting a bigger car, but yes, it worked for us. Main bug bear was that, as we had it on an Astravan, the bag had to be emptied and flattened to get the tailgate open, so I guess the box will need to be removed to get most boots open?
After we changed car, we put the bag in storage, and continued to use the base with 2 x cycle carriers on. Again it was good enough, but as we only had need for a cycle carrier by then, we upgraded to a tilting one, which is now ideal for us, as we don't have to remove bikes to get our tailgate open (on Kia Sedona).
The Easy Base is also a little on the heavy side, or at least when compared to our tilting bike carrier... but it can be carried/loaded/affixed etc by one person, of course.

I suppose for a bike carrier, there are better out there than the Easy Base version, but of course, if the main reason is for extra storage, then from what I was looking for at the time, the Easy Base with hard box would be hard to beat, with the bag offering a more affordable option. It does what it says on the tin, and certainly if you have a boot rather than a tailgate, then I reckon you'd be on to a winner!

Jogging Hippo, will look up the Bak-Rak thank you.

Mucker - yes, you do have to remove the box before you can open the boot (we have a boot). Which I can see is a major disadvantage. We'd only use it for camping so I was reckoning we would put the pitching up stuff in there and do that first. Advantage is that also the camping stuff could all live there in the box, in the garage. But think it needs careful thought.

I have one it's great, I was advised by our local car shop where I bought the Easybase not to go for the box as it wasn't built for this it was built to fit onto the back of motorhomes and the opening is at the front bottom so why you open it all the stuff can fall out.

I bought a Keter garden box which I strapped on and also strapped the base to the roofbar for added support. I'll try to upload a picture to show this.

Yep, got the Thule 900 Back-Up Box in 2009 I already had the Thule 902 EuroClassic Bike carrier and the Back-Up Box was designed to fit perfectly onto the Euro-Classic.

We used the Box for the 2000 mile return trip to the Southern Ardeche that same year.

Even though the VW Golf can take 75kg on the Tow-Ball when the car was fully loaded with all our kit, the back end of the car was almost on the floor, steering at speed would often feel vague, and even the smallest of speed humps were a challenge.

The car never recovered it's normal ground clearance, thankfully being a company driver that was not to be an issue.

The Box did the job for that year, but as soon as we got back from France I sold the Box to someone on here who had a more suitable car.

Then I bought a new Trailer as VAT was at 15% for that year, and the rest they say is history!

Thanks all. I'll have a careful think about it. We wouldn't need it for very long journeys but I can see it's not overly ideal...really appreciate the thoughts!
