Here, Here, here, here, Here, here, Here.
Seems to be quite a lot of stuff about.
However, there is no doubt that, nowadays, serious cold weather campers pretty well all use mummy bags .... they are designed to maintain most warmth ... the more air you have around your body, the colder it gets ... your body is the radiator, and the better/tighter the insulation around it is .. the more warmth results. Some man made fills are almost as good, and are worth looking at.
Possibly fishing gear sleeping kit may suit you better than real alpine/5 season bags, which, nowadays, are pretty well all mummy bags ... because that's what the pro's want.

at kelper First of all thanks for taking the time to look your suggestions out for me. I agree about the mummy bags being the norm and the reasons why. Im going to go and physically see the Outwell which was one of the first bags I looked at but I scoffed at the pack size (oh little did I know then!!) Im also going to see some fishing bags to see if they can be compressed down to a reasonable pack size Im not bothered as much about weight as I am pack size. I think the rab Ascent would be too narrow in the footbox, though I have heard of some manufacturers having an additional piece that can be zipped in to increase the room in the bag. I am also going to go back to the Cotswold Outdoor to have another look a the DofE recommended Stratos Bag as I bought the Pulsa 300 tent which is also recommended by the DofE.Thanks Again.

Snugpak have the option of a built in panel in some of there sleeping bags that can extend the width of the bag.

at frog, I went to GO today and looked at the tab ascent range but they were just too mummy shaped
at vangoman2 I went to the army surplus shop today as well and had a look at a few snugpacs only the older ones and I saw the zip in bit I was also told they now are expansion panels within the bag
