My name is Jason and I am new to the outdoor holiday scene.
I am currently slowly buying all my camping equipment ready for the Easter Holidays 2016. I will be camping with my 6 and 3 yr olds.
I have got my eye on the Coleman da gama 6 and have read some good reviews.
I have also brought some stuff from Halfords at £1 per kids chair :-p
My question is; Is there a general rule for when camping gear are on sale/cheaper?
Like would it be better after xmas to buy my gear or is there an off season for camping where the prices come down.
Any advice would be appreciated, to help this noob get together his 1st family camping trip.
This a good time to buy all your gear new as sales are on, be quick though as the bargains soon go. My local caravan/camping shop is doing 20% off so I got some stuff yesterday. If you want secondhand stuff like gas bottles & cookers etc then car boot sales in spring are good places to find them.
No, not at all, you need to shop around for everything, Campingaz stoves for example, all sorts of prices for same stove, google is your friend. You may find it cheaper locally though. My local shop, Homestead caravans is often cheapest but they are an online seller as well. Also consider returning faulty goods, its much easier if you bought it local & not online.
There will be bargains to be had from the end of August right the way through to the spring. Some shops get rid of stock right after the summer. Others wait till the 2016 stock is about to arrive. I buy most of my camping gear during this time.
Keep an eye on Nearlynewtents ebay store. Lots of Vango stuff, usually at great prices. They have new stock almost every day. If you bide your time and know what you're looking for, you can get great deals. Sports Direct have stock coming in at weird times and good prices, but don't be tempted to preorder - preorders can drag on for months and can be a pain to cancel. Amazon lightning deals can also be a good place to look.
Take your time, but act quickly when you see the right deal. A couple of years ago I bought one tent on ebay, then bought another, better one a month later. I held on to the first tent till the spring thrn sold it on ebay even making a small profit.
Also at this time of year there will be lots of people who bought new gear during the summer but have become disillusioned and decided camping isn't for them. They will be flogging their nearly new gear on such places as Gumtree and Ebay.
A couple of years ago I bought a Coleman Da Gama 6 and can recommend it as a good, spacious tent which is very easy to erect single handedly...a doddle with two of you.
I bought mine as an ex display model and got it very cheap. I wouldn't necessarily recommend that but I bid silly money on ebay and won it - lol.
If it is your first time camping maybe a second hand (used once) tent will be cheaper than buying full priced stuff and then finding you don't like camping.
Thanks for the info. I never thought to buy a 2nd hand tent. I didn't think people would sell after 1 use or 2. Definitely baring this in mind now. I will check out go outdoors this weekend to see if there is any bargains to be had.
If anyone find anything cheap online, do let me know. I only have 4 chairs at the moment and still slowly picking up other bits.
If buying a second hand tent I would advise you to check it out thoroughly for mould/mildew before parting with your cash. Hopefully see it erected. I have bought second hand tents before without looking at them first and been lucky but you don't want to part with a hundred pounds or more and find the tent isn't usable.
Having said that I have sold a few tents and nobody has ever asked to see them first...I must have an honest face
Hi Jason, where are you based? We've upgraded from tent to caravan in the last month, so have lots of gear (including an amazing tent, chemical loo, toilet tent) to shift. Won't be ebaying it until early spring, but if you're in the north west and fancy taking a look?
Go Outdoors do a price match - if you see an item elsewhere cheaper, they'll beat it by 10%. This has literally saved us a fortune! Decathlon tents are great value (ours is a huge 6 berth with a great, airy living room). Enjoy!
Be careful if you buy a tent in the end of season sales, if you decide next year that you want a porch or extension you may find that they are no longer available.
An example of the is the Outwell Birdland series. They brought out the tent one year, changed the colour the following year, changed the shape the following year, then took it out of production the following year.
Hi Jason, you are making a good choice in asking questions before buying. There is a handy checklist on this site here which can be a useful reminder of the stuff you need. It's here
Don't be put off by how long the list is. You can pick up end of season outdoor kit like plastic cutlery and crockery at supermarkets, Halfords, Poundland etc. lighting is also pretty cheap.
You also need to decide if you are going to use electric hook up for power, or stick to gas for cooking, because that has implications for the kit you need.
I agree with buy this time of year, bargains are to be had if you look hard.
Re: Ebay, too many assume its going to be the cheapest place then get a shock when it arrives from Amazon directly or another large retailer, the seller having sold it at an inflated prices and then purchased it from them for less and even getting them to deliver.
Stuff from the £1 shop for less than a £1, but then charge a bit extra on the postage to make a profit.
Before buying anything i always search ebay, amazon and any of the big named stores that may sell the item, then i search google also to see if anything pops up cheaper.
I have been searching for a Coleman Da Gama 4 but nobody seems to have one for sale. A couple of sites are showing them in stock but when I phoned them up they didn't have any so I phoned Coleman, who apparently haven't got any either
The Vango Calisto 400 is almost identical and cheaper so I may be swapping my loyalties to Vango!
