Which is the best head torch, do you reckon? As importantly, which is the best head torch offer/deal at the moment?

Help and ideas appreciated (pressie idea)!

Look on ebay at Cree rechargeable head torches, the one the other half and now all his family has is a CREE XM-L XML T6 LED Rechargeable Head Torch Zoomable Headlamp Headlight 2x18650 with car and home charger for £12.98 it is 3000 lumens (which is very bright) and has proven to be great value for money.

Depends on your budget, and what you want it for. Someone on a bike needs the light to be thrown much further than a walker because they are travelling faster. My astronomy-mad husband needs one with a red light mode. A big bloke might not notice the weight of one which uses AA batteries as much as a lady.

I've used many over the years, like Petzl best. Recently bought a Petzl Tikka RXP which has different brightness settings (and can auto adjust depending upon ambient light) and it is outstanding, best I have ever had in terms of visibility and comfort on the head.

On the Grough outdoor site there is an extensive review of about ten, which you might like to have a look it. It gives a good explanation of different features available these days.

Don't be horrified by the prices, I paid a lot less for the Tikka than shown on this article.

I also like Petzl. I have the Tikka xp2 which gives good light and comfortable to wear.

Alpkit sell a variety of well reviewed headtorches which are a bit cheaper than Petzl.

These torches are good and very bright indeed. The only drawback is that the batteries are held in a pack at the back so they are bulkier than the likes of the Petzel head torches .........they're on my wish list .

You don't actually say what the person receiving the gift is going to use it for. Walking, running or working, or just a gadget to use between tent and washblock?

If its the latter you can get cheap ones which will do the job. If it is for the former you need to think about battery life vs weight, stability on head and brightness of light etc.

I can second Alpkit head torches, I've an Alpkit Gamma and can't fault it, I got it as I couldn't justify the cost of a decent Petzl.

Another fan of lensor here. Mine has the ability to zoom the beam which makes it useful for cycling as well as camping.

Sorry, it's for a male who'll use it for running.

I have several of the Alpkit Gamma head torches and for the money, they are excellent.
One feature that's perhaps good for a runner (depending where/when he runs), the Gamma has a rear facing red lamp that can be to set to either steady or flash, that could good for being seen by others from the rear too.
Alpkit site suggests they're out of stock but should supply for Christmas.
Check this link but maybe drop them a query too, they are great to deal with and should let you know on supply fairly quickly.
