Hi, has anyone tried one of these? Looking for something better to sleep on when we take the airbeam instead of the trailer tent. We've got decent alpkit sims but last year started to find these uncomfortable so went back to an old type air bed, which though felt better as could sleep on my side, they always seem to deflate through the night! So really need to upgrade as were planning on using the airbeam for a few week stays this year.
I'm an Exped Megamat maniac - I adore ours, they are like an airbed that mated with a SIM - semi self-inflating, so you get the warmth/insulation, but also box sided and so much more yielding than a SIM without feeling the floor... especially if you are side sleeper.
They do come with a price tag but as someone said, you can't put a price on a good night's rest.
Possible alternatives to this are the OUtwell Dreamboat very similar to the Megamat but only 7.5cm deep as opposed to 10cm) and a wee fewer £££; or Thermarest's 'Dreamtime' as it was called, which did the mat, topper and cover well before Outwell. I can't recall it's new moniker but if you look the company up I'm sure you'll find it. Again, you'll need deep pockets but many campers swear by them (and again you do need space as they are bulky).
Anyway, have a little recce, and see what you think. Trying them out in person is also recommended if you can
Thanks! Had a look at thermarest and it's now the Neoair Dream, so a air mat with memory foam cover rather than a sim. Could really do to find somewhere to rest all these! The thermarest makes the out well one look a bargain! More research and some testing definitely required before purchasing!!
can you put one of these on top of a camp bed or will it move about? I'm fed up with air beds and looking to move to proper camp beds but I think I will need some kind of topped. Any advice would be welcome.
HI Philrob, people do use a SIM (self inflating mattress) on top of a campbed, with many swearing by it for a comfy warm night's sleep. And you can store things under the camp bed too.
Why not try it out at a local store, and see what suits - you probably won't need as thick a SIM to go on the bed, as you might directly onto the ground.
One has to balance budget, packing space and storage to find the optimum solution for your needs - and you'll have loads of fun experimenting and searching and deliberating
