Depends how cold it is and what gas.
Too cold and the gas may be difficult to light even if it is propane mix. Warm the cylinder in your pocket. The gas burner has a preheat pipe so once it is running it should be ok.
If it is very cold, you could try the inverted cylinder method to feed liquid gas but watch your eyebrows.
As for the meths. Never had a problem lighting it down to about -10. Some people put a tealight candle under the burner to preheat.

if your Trangia is sooty using Meths, then you haven't got the mix of 10% water right.

I don't bother with the water. I don't mind the soot. Just wash the pots.
If using bio ethanol or alcool de brulee you don't get the soot as much anyway. I have a trangia adapter for my multifuel stove but have only used it once. Too much of a faff.

I was going to ask what type of gas, and Ewen C beats me to it.

If it is butane alone at near-zero temperatures, then it is unlikely to work, and methylated spirit should be used instead.

With the new bio-ethanol you should only get soot when frying. Meths is always my preferred option & like my whisky, never with water.   You can get a Trangia winter pre-heater mail order from outside UK if you're a real Trangia fan but tea light will do just as well.

I'm testing this neat little heater at mo that fits on Trangia burner.

That looks handy spiritburner. Let us know if it is any use as a heater. I've seen a radiant heater for gas stoves that might fit on my hexxon or svea. Basically just a perforated metal chimney. Seems to be doing the rounds on eBay and Amazon.

cozy

heater

As for the trangia, has anyone tried the gel burner?

Edit: I'd be using such a heater under a tarp, not in the tent.

I've seen the Stainless Steel one for gas stoves, as you say loads on Ebay and can be bought as cheap as £8 delivered from China.

I have plenty of ventilation. We regularly use Tilleys as well. I've got one of those heaters for the Nova going spare as stove now gone. I'd be cautious on a Svea if it's the 123/123R as you don't want the tank getting over hot from reflected heat & blowing the SRV.

Point taken re the svea. Didn't think of that. I'll just bung it on the hexon and see if it is worth it. At only £8 it is worth a try.
