our `van has only three plug sockets. can we use an extension lead (fused ) to gain more sockets for appliances?

Yes as long as you don't overload the individual socket or the van/site overall. Watch for those trailing leads though

be safer to run a couple of extra sockets, and not to expensive to do.

I've added a few sockets in my 'van. Well to count I've added four double sockets. I am a qualified electrician and thought it safer to add fixed sockets. I’ve put a double socket under the basin in the toilet to charge electric tooth brushes, I’ve added one near the door for a variety of things and I’ve also added two double sockets with USB charging sockets as we seem to take a wide range of phones and cameras.
It is all safe as long as you use the correct size of cable and make sure all connections are done correctly. The MCB in the caravan will trip before there is any dangerous overload. In my caravan all the wiring is good for over 20 amps so it is should not be possible to overload it as the site MCB should trip at 16 amp max.
Fixed sockets are safer than trailing cables as they are a trip hazard

We had 127 nights away in the caravan in 2023.

As a qualified electrician you must be aware that a 16A MCB
won't trip at 16A.

I agree, it is possible to run more amps through a MCB than the rated current but equally the cables in my caravan are all rated at over 20 amps so it is safe.

A quality trailing ganged extension socket should be fine, providing you plug in low power appliances (chargers, ipods and such). Heaters, kettles, hairdryers etc. should use proper sockets.

Steer clear of £4.99 cheapos - they're cheap for a reason.

If you are unsure how to DIY extra sockets getting a qualified electrician is the way to do it. Extension leads can be a trip hazard in the limited space in a caravan. It may be possible to get extra sockets installed where you want them at the next service.
