We have been managing with a cheap water carrier but it drives me mad as it never sits properly on the table and tips over. So I've been looking for a new one.
Criteria are:
1. Has a tap . (In the past I have just taken a large 5 litre bottle from the supermarket but I find it annoying having to lift the whole thing up just to fill a cup or rinse a cloth, and the children can't lift it to pour themselves a drink of water.)
2. Collapsible. Space in the car is minimal so everything has to take as little space as possible!
3. Won't leave a nasty taste to the water!
We bought the 7ltr Kampa Keg a couple of weeks ago in anticipation for our end of May trip. However every time I put it away with the rest of the camping gear, out it comes again. The kids love being able to get a drink for themselves, it's incredibly stable on the worktop, and holds a lot of water. It gets a thumbs up from us, even though it hasn't made its camping debut yet.
I bought the keg for the caravan for one night stop overs to save me filling up the water system, does the job great, however the weak point is the tap, because it sticks out so much is vulnerable to breaking off or cracking if you catch it against anything
It's always frustrated me in the past that water carrier taps always leak a little bit, this resulted in our last one having to be used on its side and then tipping it up to use the tap.
This year we have bought the Kampa Keg 7.5 litre one. We haven't used it camping yet but it is a revalation. We filled it and left it full for several days, not one drop of a leak from the tap! The tap is also a really good design, you can push it one way to keep a constant water flow or push it the other way and it only flows while the tap is pressed.
It's stable when open and compact when folded. Seems like the perfect water carrier!
Just to report back - I got the Kampa Keg and it was great. Sturdy on the table, good flow rate from the tap, no leaks, and folds down easily. It has a carry handle so I even got the kids fetching water for me!
After using it I made sure it was dry before packing it away so it didn't go stale, its quite easy to clean the inside out if you need to because you can reach inside to clean it out.
