If he wants want to pick up TV abroad then he will need a satellite dish not an aerial however, if he just wants terrestrial TV (Freeview) in the UK then a "Log Periodic" type aerial is probably his best bet.

Log periodic and Yagi are completely different.
Log periodic is a wideband aerial suitable for use all over UK. It has 2 main spars with side elements decreasing in size towards the front
Yagi is a narrow band aerial tuned to the TV frequency in your area. It usually has a single central spar with a reflector at the back, a recieving element and multiple director elements towards the front.
