Hot water and washing up liquid will take off most of the soft gunk, then give it a go over with Mr Muscle foam oven cleaner for the burnt on stuff (wear gloves!). We loaned ours out last year and got it back, months later, covered in burnt on food, old grease and mould! (It had been lying in back garden of daughter of friend we loaned it to). I could have cried and we thought it wasn't worth saving. Priced new replacement bbq plate, grill and base on line at around £75, then decided to have a go cleaning it up. Husband had to take battery drill with wire brush attachment to parts, but after an evening of soaking and cleaning it came up grand and will give us another 8 years of use hopefully. After a heavy bbq I always squirted washing up liquid over the plate and base and poured in a kettle of boiling water, let it sit for a while and then it's easy to clean.
