Yep, just as well that you had the battery monitor, using the ice blocks is the trick with these thermoelectric cool box's.
Since Tesco have had the ice blocks on clearance at 50p each, I have added a few more to my collection, in fact I now have 14 of the ice block's, so each morning I rotate 7 from the Aldi electric cool box.
I keep a wireless digital thermometer in the cool box, and by the time I get to work, the temp can be as low as -2Deg C and by the time it's time to come home 8 hours later is rarely above +5DegC a lot depends on the ambient temp, and the ice blocks are often still part frozen 24 hours later, I have noticed when swopping them out the next morning.
It does make me think would a non electric cool box work just as well, especially one of the premium brands like iceytec or igloo, although I doubt you could get a 36lt model for under £30 which the Aldi electric cool box's are at the moment in my local store.
