We invested in an exped megamat duo 10 and took it on its first outing with our 3.5 year old and 7 week old sons last weekend.
We didn't want to pack 4 separate sleeping bags so for the first time ever we took a quilt camping. I shared the megamat with the kids and my husband was on our thermarest bed and we all shared our super king duvet from home.
It was awesome! Im never going back to sleeping bags!
But we're going to France in August without a caravan (we usually borrow the inlaws but they are using it) and I don't think we could squeeze our quilt from home in the car even in a compression bag.
Can anyone recommend or suggest something that's specifically made for camping and packs down small. The cheaper the better but ultimately We'd splash out if it was the perfect bit of kit.
Hey,
We use the vacuum bags for duvets and pillows. Can't believe how small/flat it gets them. Then coming home roll and squeeze the air out. Doesn't pack as small but still a great space saver. Duvets all the way for us :))
There is a duvet called Spundown from The Fine Bedding Company, even the kingsize can fit in a domestic washing machine!
They compress down very easily.
We have the all season so 13.5 tog, but in two duvets 4.5 and 9.
This is not camping kit, and they are not cheap, but can be rolled up quiet small. So might work?!
Try Goose Down Duvets. Not cheap but they do pack down into a very small space if placed in vaccum bags. They are very light weight and beautiful to sleep under as they settle around the body. I can recommend Hungarian Goose Down
I put my duvet and sheets and a pillow into a compression bag but didn't think it was very small. The duvet is synthetic I think maybe that's why? I got it to about 1m x 50cm x 20. Maybe I'm being too ambitious with how small a duvet can go?
I'll have a look at your suggestions - so long as it packs small I'm happy. We also have a small handheld Hoover for coming home. Yay!
Our is a 13.5tog feather and king size down duvet and we packed it with daughters 9 tog down duvet and it vacuumed much smaller than that. Def try a down. We find them much warmer and they do settle round u much better. The synthetic ones tend to just lay on top with gaps.
We take a 4.5 tog duvet when we go to France in summer months. They can be bought quite cheaply from the likes of Dunelm (Fogerty superkingsize is £19.99). They seem to compress more easily and can go back into the original packaging complete with cover.
We also take fleece blankets so we can add (or take away) layers. It's easier to pack smaller items rather than one huge bulky duvet. Again, lots of choice in Dunelm and there are some nice ones in Aldi at the moment.
