Hi! I have always camped but we're now at a stage of life where the financial outlay is far more significant than it used to be and I'm a little anxious about what kind of insurance we need, or if we will need to go for several policies. We've always just had regular travel insurance, which is fine for most of out stuff. I am now concerned that however high we go on belongings cover, it will not cover our tent, that for us was a significant investment, and some other bits of our higher quality equipment (cooker, kitchen, chairs) when left on a campsite. We have also just taken the decision to go from a roof box to a trailer. Again, a significant financial outlay that is not covered (as far as I can see) by our car or travel insurance for theft or damage. Can anybody suggest the best place to start?! Many thanks.

i would start by looking at your home insurance. Most policies have a bolt-on of sorts for possessions you take away from the home, although many wont cover some aspects of camping gear, others are quite generic and cover almost anything.

re the trailer when its on the car then you have indemnity included on the car insurance for damage caused, but it wont cover damage to the trailer, so i would get a specific trailer policy. a quick google will give you loads of companies. Just read the T&Cs and only pay for what you need and pay particular attention to security requirements.
You might want to see what you have on breakdown cover too as most polices will stretch to a tyre change, but if something happened to the trailer, eg. an accident that damages the trailer then you have to claim on any trailer insurance.

Thanks. That's really helpful. Will go over my home policy with a fine tooth comb!

Be careful!
Some say the tent must be in your possession/you must be in attendance... not good if you fancy going off site for a few hours!
Some may not cover you abroad.
Some may not cover your neighbour if your tent blows away and damages their tent!

On paper at least, Shield seemed to tick all the boxes we wanted ticking... although I concede that they are not as cheap as I'd hoped, and importantly... I have not made a claim to date, which of course, is the proof of the pudding!

The link is there, if it interests you!

Thanks. There are so many variables. In 15 years of camping with my own equipment (as opposed to my parents!) I think this is the first time we've invested enough and had no desire for an excuse to replace to warrant decent insurance!
